Laurel Near is an American actress, director, and teacher, and a central figure in the history of the Dell'Arte International School of Physical Theatre. Joining the company in its early years, she was instrumental in defining its unique style, based on physical theatre, commedia dell'arte, and collective creation. Throughout her long career, she has held roles of increasing responsibility, becoming Co-Artistic Director and, for many years, the organization's Executive Director. As a member of the original ensemble, she participated in the creation and performance of numerous productions that solidified the company's international reputation.
