Lélia Wanick Salgado

Lélia Wanick Salgado, born in Vitória, Brazil, in 1944, is a Brazilian curator, designer, and environmentalist, known for her fundamental collaboration with photographer Sebastião Salgado. Trained in architecture and urban planning in Paris, she has conceived and designed almost all of her husband's books and exhibitions, defining the aesthetic and presentation of monumental projects such as "Workers," "Migrations," and "Genesis." Her role has been crucial not only in the selection of images but also in creating the overall visual concept that characterizes their work. In addition to her editorial work, in 1998 she and Salgado co-founded the Instituto Terra, a non-governmental organization dedicated to the reforestation of the Atlantic Forest in Brazil, which has transformed a degraded area into a nature reserve. For her artistic and environmental commitment, she has received numerous awards, including the Praemium Imperiale (2021), shared with her husband, and was elected a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
