Lew Ayres
Lew Ayres (1908-1996) was an American actor. He achieved international fame for his portrayal of Paul Bäumer in *All Quiet on the Western Front* (1930), an iconic depiction of youthful disillusionment in war.
In the 1930s and 1940s, he became immensely popular as Dr. James Kildare in the eponymous MGM film series, embodying the archetype of the idealistic and compassionate physician. Ayres was often cast in roles as idealistic, intelligent, and sensitive young men, a far cry from the stereotype of the muscular action hero.
His career suffered a temporary setback due to his status as a conscientious objector during World War II, although he continued to work afterward, primarily in supporting roles and on television.
