Li Wei
Li Wei, born in 1970 in Hubei, China, is a contemporary artist internationally renowned for his combination of performance art and photography. His career is defined by works that portray him in surreal and seemingly dangerous situations, defying the laws of gravity. Using a complex system of wires, scaffolding, and mirrors, which are then digitally removed in post-production, he creates illusions of flight, falling, or merging with the urban and natural environment. His photographic performances, often ironic and charged with social critique, explore themes such as globalization, urban development, and the precarious condition of the individual in modern society. His photographs have gained widespread recognition and have been exhibited in prestigious international institutions, including the Centre Pompidou in Paris and MoMA in New York, solidifying his position as one of the most original and recognizable figures in contemporary Chinese art.
