Louis Leubas

Louis Leubas, the stage name of Charles-Louis Leubas (1869-1932), was a French silent film actor, primarily known for portraying the criminal mastermind Fantômas in the famous film series directed by Louis Feuillade between 1913 and 1914. His performance, characterized by an aura of mystery and cruelty, established him as one of the first major stars of French cinema and an icon of the serial genre. Before his success in cinema, Leubas had a solid stage career and also collaborated with Feuillade on other Gaumont productions. His rise, however, was abruptly cut short in 1918 when he was sentenced to hard labor for life for complicity in the murder of the first husband of his lover, actress Yvette Feuillet. This event ended his career, and today his figure remains inextricably linked to the character that brought him fame, yet also overshadowed by his dramatic personal life.
