Luminița Gheorghiu

Luminița Gheorghiu (1949–2021) was a Romanian actress, considered one of the most emblematic figures of the Romanian New Wave. After graduating from the Institute of Theatre and Film Arts in Bucharest, she built a solid theatre career before achieving international fame. Her role as a nurse in Cristi Puiu's film *The Death of Mr. Lăzărescu* (2005) earned her worldwide critical acclaim, establishing her as a face of her country's cinematic renewal. She went on to star in acclaimed works such as Cristian Mungiu's *4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days* (2007). The peak of her career came with *Child's Pose* (original title: *Poziția copilului*, 2013) by Călin Peter Netzer, where her intense portrayal of a possessive mother was instrumental in the film winning the Golden Bear for Best Film at the Berlin Film Festival. Recognized for her naturalistic style and her ability to embody complex characters with great depth, Gheorghiu remains a central figure in contemporary European cinema.
