Lya Lys

Lya Lys (born Natalia Lyech; Berlin, May 18, 1908 – Newport Beach, June 2, 1986) was a German-born American actress. Her film career is primarily associated with her role as the female lead in the surrealist masterpiece by Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dalí, *L'âge d'or* (1930), which secured her a place in the history of avant-garde cinema. After this iconic performance, she moved to Hollywood where she appeared in several productions during the 1930s. Among her most notable works from her American period are the anti-Nazi propaganda film *Confessions of a Nazi Spy* (1939) and the B-movie horror *The Return of Doctor X* (1939), in which she acted alongside a young Humphrey Bogart. Despite a promising start, her career declined and ended in the early 1940s. Although she did not win any major awards, her recognition is inextricably linked to her participation in Buñuel's influential work.
