Madeleine Barbulée
Madeleine Barbulée (Nancy, September 2, 1910 – Paris, January 1, 2001) was a French actress, an emblematic figure of 20th-century film and theatre. Her prolific career, which spanned over sixty years, established her as one of the most acclaimed character actresses of her time. After an intense start in theatre, during which she co-founded the Compagnie du Rideau Gris, she made her name on the big screen, becoming a familiar face in the post-war era. She worked with first-rate directors such as Jean Renoir in *French Cancan* (1954), René Clair in *Les Grandes Manœuvres* (1955), and Henri-Georges Clouzot in the classic *Les Diaboliques* (1955), portraying roles of common women, governesses, or religious figures with great naturalness. The pinnacle of her artistic career came in 1991, when she was awarded the César Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the film *Le Bal du Gouverneur*.
