Magaye Niang

Magaye Niang (Dakar, 1948 – Dakar, October 25, 2023) was a Senegalese actor and artist, internationally known for his leading role in the cult film *Touki Bouki* (1973), directed by Djibril Diop Mambéty. In this work, considered a milestone of African cinema, Niang portrays Mory, a young herdsman who dreams of escaping Dakar to reach France. His iconic performance contributed to the film's success, which won the FIPRESCI Prize at the Cannes Film Festival and established him as a symbolic face of the Senegalese New Wave. His film career remained closely linked to Mambéty, for whom he also acted in subsequent works such as *Hyènes* (1992). Alongside his acting, Niang was an esteemed painter and visual artist, an activity he pursued with dedication throughout his life, exhibiting his works on several occasions. His figure remains a point of reference for Senegalese cinema and art.
