Marcel André

Marcel André (1885-1974) was a French actor who enjoyed a successful career on both stage and screen. A pillar of the Comédie-Française, which he joined in 1923, he became a *sociétaire* in 1928—a prestigious status he held for over two decades, excelling in the classical repertoire. Concurrently, he established himself on the big screen as a prolific and esteemed character actor, collaborating with the leading directors of his era. His most memorable performances include roles in films such as Jacques Becker's *Goupi Mains Rouges* (1943), Henri-Georges Clouzot's *Le Corbeau* (1943), and Jean Cocteau's *Les Parents terribles* (1948). Thanks to his authoritative stage presence and precise diction, he was often cast in roles as dignitaries, magistrates, or bourgeois professionals, becoming a familiar and respected face in post-war French cinema.
