Maria Teresa Salgado Rocha Bastos
Maria Teresa Salgado Rocha Bastos (Covilhã, 1952 – Porto, 1995) was a Portuguese architect. After graduating from the Lisbon School of Fine Arts in 1976, she began an intense professional and personal collaboration with architect Álvaro Siza Vieira, with whom she established a studio in Porto. Her role was fundamental in the development of some of the most significant works of contemporary Portuguese architecture. Projects to which she made an essential contribution include the Bouça Residents' Association housing complex in Porto, the social housing plan for the Malagueira district in Évora, the 'Bonjour Tristesse' building in Berlin, and the reconstruction plan for the Chiado area in Lisbon following the 1988 fire. Although many prestigious international awards, such as the Pritzker Prize, were formally awarded to Siza, Bastos's intellectual and design contribution is widely recognized by critics as an inseparable component of the success and architectural vision of these acclaimed works.
