Marisa Merlini

Marisa Merlini (Rome, 6 August 1923 – Rome, 27 July 2008) was an Italian actress, one of the most noted character actresses of post-war cinema. Gifted with a distinct comic verve and a strong stage presence, she established herself as an iconic face of the *commedia all'italiana*, often playing roles of exuberant and genuine working-class women with an unmistakable Roman accent. Her prolific career, which spanned over fifty years, saw her collaborate with the greatest directors, including Luigi Comencini, for whom she was the unforgettable midwife Annarella in *Pane, amore e fantasia* (1953), and Mario Monicelli. Among her hundreds of performances are her roles in Luigi Zampa's *Il vigile* (1960), alongside Alberto Sordi, and her intense dramatic performance in *Un borghese piccolo piccolo* (1977). Her versatility was recognized with the Nastro d'Argento for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the film *Teresa* (1987) by Dino Risi.
