Mark Frechette
Mark Frechette (Boston, December 4, 1947 – Norfolk, September 27, 1975) was an American actor. His fame is inextricably linked to his starring role in Michelangelo Antonioni's film *Zabriskie Point* (1970). A non-professional actor, he was discovered by the director almost by chance, becoming an icon of the era's counterculture thanks to his performance. His brief but intense film career developed mainly in Italy, where, in addition to Antonioni's film, he starred in Francesco Rosi's *Uomini contro* (1970) and Filippo Ottoni's *La grande scrofa nera* (1971). Although he did not receive any major official awards for his performances, his face became a symbol of the protest cinema of that period. His career was tragically cut short in 1973, when he was arrested for a bank robbery; he died in prison two years later, bringing an end to one of the most singular and brief career arcs in modern cinema.
