Martin Bormann

Martin Bormann was a prominent German official and head of the Nazi Party Chancellery (NSDAP). Joining the party in 1927, he began his political career as chief of staff to Rudolf Hess. After Hess's flight in 1941, he became Adolf Hitler's private secretary, consolidating enormous influence. As head of the *Parteikanzlei*, his work consisted of controlling the flow of information and access to the Führer, issuing decrees in his name, and managing the party's finances and Hitler's personal finances. He was noted for his efficient administration of bureaucratic power, promoting anti-clerical policies and contributing to the implementation of persecutory measures. His titles and ranks included the highest party rank, *Reichsleiter*, and that of SS-Obergruppenführer. Tried in absentia at Nuremberg, he was sentenced to death for war crimes and crimes against humanity. He died in May 1945 during an attempt to escape from Berlin; his remains were formally identified only in 1972.
