He is best known as the founder and one of the lead singers of the psychedelic rock group Jefferson Airplane, a key figure in the San Francisco music scene of the 1960s. After leaving the band, he reunited with his former bandmates in the successor band, Jefferson Starship, leading them to commercial success with hugely popular songs such as "Miracles" and "With Your Love". His solo career includes the 1981 hit "Hearts". For his work with Jefferson Airplane, Balin was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 and received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016, in recognition of his lasting impact on the history of rock.
