Marval

Jacqueline Marval, born Marie-Joséphine Vallet (1866–1932), was a French painter and a prominent figure in the Parisian art scene of the early twentieth century. A self-taught artist, she made her debut at the Salon des Indépendants in 1901 and quickly established herself with her bold style and vibrant use of color. While associated with Fauvism, she maintained a strong independence. Her preferred subjects included female portraits, nudes, still lifes, and circus scenes, celebrating a modern and self-assured femininity. Her most celebrated work, *The Odalisques* (1902–1903), was noted by the critic Guillaume Apollinaire and purchased by the dealer Ambroise Vollard, consolidating her fame. She participated in major international exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale, and her works were appreciated in both Europe and the United States. For her contribution to French art, she was awarded the Legion of Honour.
