Masao Shimizu (清水 将夫, Shimizu Masao; October 5, 1908 – October 5, 1988) was a prolific Japanese actor whose career spanned over five decades, establishing him as one of the most recognizable and versatile character actors in Japanese cinema. He is best known for his numerous collaborations with director Akira Kurosawa, appearing in films such as *Stray Dog* (1949), *Scandal* (1950), *The Idiot* (1951), and, in a memorable role, *Ikiru* (1952). His filmography, which includes over 250 titles, also features works with other masters like Kenji Mizoguchi and Mikio Naruse, as well as appearances in genre films such as *Godzilla Raids Again* (1955). For his intense performance in *Ikiru*, he won the prestigious Mainichi Film Award for Best Supporting Actor, an accolade that solidified his reputation. His ability to portray authority figures and professionals made him a key presence during the golden age of Japanese cinema.
