
Masato Hagiwara
Masato Hagiwara (萩原 聖人, Hagiwara Masato; Tokyo, September 21, 1971) is a Japanese actor, voice actor, and professional mahjong player. He made his debut in the late 1980s, soon earning significant accolades. In 1994, he won the Japan Academy Prize for Newcomer of the Year for *Kyōso tanjō* and the Blue Ribbon Award for Best Actor for *Mark no Yama*. His international fame was consolidated with his leading role in Kiyoshi Kurosawa's cult film *Cure* (1997). He is particularly known for portraying the character Kaiji Itō in both the live-action films of the *Kaiji* series and as the voice actor in the anime adaptation. As a voice actor, he is also celebrated for the roles of Shigeru Akagi in *Tōhai Densetsu Akagi* and Kōichi Tokita in Satoshi Kon's *Paprika*. In addition to acting, Hagiwara is an established mahjong player, competing professionally in the M.League, thus combining his two great passions.
