Maurice Black
Maurice Black (1891–1938) was a Canadian-born American character actor, primarily active during the Golden Age of Hollywood. Known for his distinct features, he specialized in portraying gangsters and criminals, becoming a familiar face in the crime films of the 1930s. After a stage career on Broadway, he moved to Hollywood with the advent of sound film, where his stage experience proved invaluable. Among his most significant appearances, although often in supporting or uncredited roles, are classics such as *Little Caesar* (1931), *The Front Page* (1931), and *Scarface* (1932). In the latter, he played the role of Tony "Big Louie" Costillo. Despite not receiving any major awards, his prolific career, with over one hundred film appearances in less than a decade, established him as one of the most recognizable and reliable supporting actors of the gangster genre, helping to define the aesthetic of the period. His career was cut short by his death at the age of 47.
