Maurice Schutz (1866-1955) was a French actor, an iconic figure of silent cinema and the early sound era. Specializing in roles of elderly characters, often enigmatic, wise, or vulnerable, his on-screen presence was marked by a restrained dignity and profound intensity.

He is perhaps best known for his collaborations with visionary directors. With Carl Theodor Dreyer, he played the old gentleman in the evocative *Vampyr* (1932) and Judge Nicolas Loiseleur in *The Passion of Joan of Arc* (1928). He also worked with Abel Gance, appearing in epic films such as *Napoléon* (1927).

His long career and his ability to embody memorable figures made him a recognizable and beloved face of the cinema of his time.
