Max Amann

Max Amann (1891-1957) was a German politician, publisher, and Nazi official. Adolf Hitler's sergeant during World War I, he was one of the earliest members of the Nazi Party. His career was inextricably linked to the regime's publishing industry. He directed the party's central publishing house, the Eher-Verlag, and was the publisher of *Mein Kampf*, for which he suggested the final title. Appointed Reichsleiter for the Press and president of the Reich Press Chamber (Reichspressekammer), he gained total control over the German press. Under his leadership, hundreds of independent newspapers were shut down or forcibly taken over, making him one of the wealthiest and most powerful men in the Third Reich. He also achieved the rank of SS-Obergruppenführer. Arrested after the war, he was sentenced during the denazification process to ten years of hard labor and stripped of his property. He died in poverty in Munich.
