Mbissine Thérèse Diop
Mbissine Thérèse Diop is a Senegalese actress, best known for her leading role in Ousmane Sembène's 1966 film *La Noire de...*. Her portrayal of Diouana, a young Senegalese woman working as a domestic servant in France, is considered iconic, and the film itself is a milestone in African cinema, winning the Jean Vigo Prize. Although she was not a professional actress at the time of her casting, her performance defined a foundational work of postcolonial cinema. She also acted in another of Sembène's films, *Emitai* (1971), before stepping away from acting for several decades, during which she worked as a seamstress. She returned to acting in 2020 with the film *Mignonnes* by Maïmouna Doucouré. For her fundamental contribution to the history of cinema, she was honored at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival during the presentation of the restored version of *La Noire de...*, consolidating her status as a legendary figure.
