Mehmet Emin Toprak
Mehmet Emin Toprak (Yenice, September 11, 1974 – Çan, December 2, 2002) was a Turkish actor. His short but significant career is inextricably linked to director and cousin Nuri Bilge Ceylan, who directed him throughout his entire filmography. He made his debut in the feature film *Kasaba* (1997) and continued the collaboration with *Mayıs Sıkıntısı* (Clouds of May, 1999). His most acclaimed performance is as Yusuf in the film *Uzak* (Distant, 2002), for which he won, ex aequo with co-star Muzaffer Özdemir, the Best Actor award at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival. Toprak died tragically in a car accident shortly after filming was completed and before the film's presentation at the festival, thus receiving the prestigious award posthumously. His acting, characterized by an intense naturalism, is considered a key element of the aesthetic of Ceylan's early works.
