Mercedes McCambridge (1916-2004) was an American actress active in radio, stage, film, and television. She began her career as an acclaimed radio performer before making her big screen debut in *All the King's Men* (1949). For her performance in this film, she immediately won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress and the Golden Globe Award. Her career includes memorable roles such as the antagonist in *Johnny Guitar* (1954) and the performance that earned her a second Academy Award nomination for *Giant* (1956). She is also universally known for providing the guttural voice for the demon Pazuzu in the film *The Exorcist* (1973), an initially uncredited contribution that was later recognized.
