Michael Podchlebnik

Michael Podchlebnik (1907–1985) was a Polish Jew, known for being one of the very few survivors of the Chełmno (Kulmhof) extermination camp. Deported in December 1941, he was forced to work in the Sonderkommando, the special unit tasked with burying the bodies of victims murdered in gas vans. During this horrific task, he recognized the bodies of his own wife and two children. After escaping the camp in January 1942, his testimony became of fundamental historical importance. After the war, he provided crucial testimony in several trials, including the trial of Adolf Eichmann in Jerusalem in 1961 and the Chełmno trials in Germany. His main posthumous recognition stems from his interview in Claude Lanzmann's 1985 documentary *Shoah*, which immortalized his experience and solidified his role as a key witness to the horrors of the Shoah.
