Michel Subor

Michel Subor, stage name of Mischa Subotzki (Paris, 2 February 1935 – 17 January 2022), was a French actor of Russian origin. His career is inextricably linked to the French Nouvelle Vague, and he rose to prominence as the protagonist of Jean-Luc Godard's *Le Petit Soldat* (1963), in which he plays the deserter Bruno Forestier. During the same period, his deep and distinctive voice was chosen by François Truffaut for the role of the voice-over narrator in the celebrated *Jules and Jim* (1962). Throughout his long career, he also worked internationally, appearing in Alfred Hitchcock's *Topaz* (1969). He experienced a significant critical resurgence starting in the late 1990s, thanks to his fruitful collaboration with director Claire Denis. For her, he iconographically reprised the character of Forestier in the cult film *Beau Travail* (1999) and subsequently acted in works such as *L'intrus* (2004) and *Les Salauds* (2013), consolidating his status as an enigmatic and charismatic actor of auteur cinema.
