Morris Carnovsky (1897-1992) was an American actor and a prominent figure in 20th-century American theater and film. He was one of the founding members of the Group Theatre in the 1930s, a collective that introduced the Stanislavski method to the United States, where he distinguished himself in plays by Clifford Odets such as *Awake and Sing!* and *Golden Boy*. Concurrently, he built a solid career in Hollywood, appearing in films such as *The Life of Emile Zola* (1937), *Tortilla Flat* (1942), and *Rhapsody in Blue* (1945). His film career was abruptly interrupted in the 1950s when he was blacklisted in Hollywood for refusing to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee. He successfully returned to the stage, becoming one of the most acclaimed Shakespearean actors of his generation; his portrayal of King Lear, in particular, is considered legendary. For his contributions, he was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame in 1979, capping a career that also saw him as a respected acting teacher.
