Mrs. Morgan Belmont
Margaret Andrews Belmont (née Margaret Frances Andrews) was an American philanthropist and patron of the arts, known for her significant contributions to the world of opera and her humanitarian work. During World War I, she founded the American Red Cross chapter in Newport, Rhode Island, demonstrating an early social commitment. Her name is inextricably linked to the Metropolitan Opera in New York, where she became the first woman elected to its board of directors. In 1935, she founded the Metropolitan Opera Guild, an organization created to broaden financial support and public interest in the institution. She initiated the celebrated Saturday afternoon radio broadcasts, which made opera accessible to a national audience. For her commitment, she received numerous honors, including the Gold Medal of the National Institute of Social Sciences and her appointment as a Knight of the French Legion of Honor.
