Naunton Wayne
Naunton Wayne, born Henry Wayne Davies (Llanwonno, 22 June 1901 – Surbiton, 17 November 1970), was a Welsh actor. He is primarily known for his artistic partnership with Basil Radford, with whom he formed the iconic duo of Charters and Caldicott. The pair, who embodied two cricket-obsessed English gentlemen comically unperturbed in the face of danger, debuted in Alfred Hitchcock's thriller *The Lady Vanishes* (1938). The duo's success was such that they went on to reprise the roles in numerous other films, including *Night Train to Munich* (1940), and in various radio productions. His prolific film career, however, was not limited to that role, including appearances in British cinema classics such as the anthology film *Dead of Night* (1945) and the Ealing comedy *Passport to Pimlico* (1949). Also active in theatre and television, Wayne became one of the most recognisable and beloved character actors of his time, celebrated for his impeccable comic timing and his ability to portray the archetypal Englishman.
