Nedrick Young

Nedrick Young (1914-1968) was an American actor and screenwriter whose career was profoundly influenced by his inclusion on the Hollywood blacklist. Forced to work under the pseudonym Nathan E. Douglas, he co-wrote the screenplay for the celebrated film *The Defiant Ones* (1958) with Harold Jacob Smith. For this work, the two won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, although due to the blacklist, the award was initially credited to Smith alone. Young's credit was officially restored posthumously by the Writers Guild of America and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. His collaboration with Smith also produced the screenplay for the film *Inherit the Wind* (1960). As an actor, Young appeared in numerous films and television productions, with roles in films such as *The Treasure of Pancho Villa* (1955) and *Jailhouse Rock* (1957). His story represents an important example of the consequences of McCarthyism on the film industry.
