Odoardo Spadaro

Odoardo Spadaro (Florence, January 16, 1893 – Florence, June 26, 1965) was an Italian singer-songwriter, actor, and comedian, a multifaceted figure in 20th-century entertainment. He began his career in variety theater, quickly establishing himself as one of the most celebrated performers of the café-chantant. His musical output is inextricably linked to his native city, of which he became an icon: his most famous song, "La porti un bacione a Firenze," composed in 1937, became an anthem for Italian emigrants around the world. His other successes include "Il valzer della povera gente" and "Sulla carrozzella." Concurrently, Spadaro had a prolific career as a character actor in cinema, appearing in numerous films from the silent era to the 1950s, where he embodied the Tuscan spirit with wit and good nature. His style, a balance between irony and sentimentalism, guaranteed him lasting recognition as one of the foremost interpreters of Florentine song and popular culture.
