Otto Preminger
Otto Ludwig Preminger was an Austrian-born American director, producer, and actor whose career spanned five decades. After a successful start in Viennese theater, he moved to Hollywood, where he established himself with the film noir *Laura* (1944), which earned him his first Academy Award nomination for Best Director. Known for challenging the censorship of the Hays Code, Preminger tackled controversial subjects in films such as *The Moon Is Blue* (1953), *The Man with the Golden Arm* (1955), on the subject of drug addiction, and the celebrated courtroom drama *Anatomy of a Murder* (1959). His extensive filmography also includes the epic *Exodus* (1960), with which he helped break the Hollywood blacklist. His style was distinguished by an objective mise-en-scène and the use of complex long takes. He received a second Academy Award nomination and a Golden Globe for *The Cardinal* (1963) and won the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival for *Carmen Jones* (1954).
