Paul McGrath is a former Irish footballer, considered one of the greatest defenders of his generation. Despite suffering from chronic knee problems which limited his training, his exceptional on-field performances earned him the prestigious PFA Players' Player of the Year award in 1993, a rare recognition for a defender. For the Republic of Ireland national team, he was a mainstay, participating in the 1990 and 1994 World Cups and the 1988 European Championship, earning 83 caps.
