Paula Biren

Paula Biren, née Nagorski (Łódź, 1925 – Santa Barbara, 2012), was a Polish-Jewish Holocaust survivor whose testimony had a significant impact on historical documentation. Deported in 1943 to the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp, she was assigned to the "Kanada" commando, tasked with sorting the belongings confiscated from prisoners. Her first-hand experience and lucid account, recorded by the USC Shoah Foundation, became the focal point of the documentary *One Day in Auschwitz* (2015), produced by Steven Spielberg. Through her account, Biren provided an essential perspective on daily life, internal dynamics, and acts of resistance within the camp. For her invaluable contribution to Holocaust remembrance and education, her testimony is recognized as a historical source of primary importance. After the liberation, she emigrated to the United States, where she resided until her death.
