Percy Helton

Percy Helton (New York, January 31, 1894 – Hollywood, September 11, 1971) was an American actor. A prolific character actor, active from the silent era until the 1970s, he became known for his high-pitched, wheezing voice and short stature, traits that made him instantly recognizable. His film career includes over two hundred appearances, often in roles as complaining, nervous, or comedic characters. Among his most memorable performances are those in *Miracle on 34th Street* (1947), as the drunken Santa Claus, *The Set-Up* (1949), the noir *Kiss Me Deadly* (1955), and *Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid* (1969). He was also a constant presence in numerous television series, especially in westerns. Although he never received major awards, his contribution as one of the most reliable and distinctive character actors of classic Hollywood is widely recognized.
