Peter Chatel (born Peter Schlätel; Bad Segeberg, 1943 – Hamburg, 1986) was a German actor and a prominent figure of the New German Cinema. His career is inextricably linked to his collaboration with director Rainer Werner Fassbinder, for whom he played leading roles in seminal films such as *The Merchant of Four Seasons* (1972), *Beware of a Holy Whore* (1971), and *Effi Briest* (1974). For his intense performance in *The Merchant of Four Seasons*, he won Germany's most important film award, the Deutscher Filmpreis for Best Actor, in 1972. In addition to his association with Fassbinder, Chatel worked in international productions, acting for directors such as Luchino Visconti in *Conversation Piece* (1974) and Ulli Lommel in *The Tenderness of Wolves* (1973). His filmography also includes titles such as *Fox and His Friends* (1975) and *Kamikaze 1989* (1982), consolidating his image as an interpreter of complex and tormented characters.
