Philippe March

Philippe March, the stage name of Aimé de March (Elbeuf, September 15, 1924 – Cagnes-sur-Mer, July 12, 1980), was a French actor. His film career is inextricably linked to the role of Roland Darbant in Jacques Becker's masterpiece, *Le Trou* (The Hole, 1960), which brought him to the attention of the general public. A character actor with a stern face and an imposing physical presence, he specialized in roles as gangsters, policemen, and tough guys. He worked with some of the most important French directors of his time, appearing in films such as Jean-Pierre Melville's *Le Doulos* (The Finger Man, 1962), Claude Sautet's *L'Arme à gauche* (The Dictator's Gun, 1965), and Yves Boisset's *Un condé* (The Cop, 1970). Alongside his film career, he maintained a solid theatrical career, particularly with the Théâtre National Populaire directed by Jean Vilar. Although he never achieved the status of a leading man, he remained a key figure in French crime and auteur cinema of the 1960s and 1970s.
