
Piper Laurie
Piper Laurie, born Rosetta Jacobs (Detroit, January 22, 1932 – Los Angeles, October 14, 2023), was an American actress. After debuting in the 1950s with Universal Studios, she gained international recognition with the film *The Hustler* (1961), for which she received her first Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. After stepping away from the screen for over a decade, she returned with powerful performances that defined the second phase of her career. She received two more Academy Award nominations, both for Best Supporting Actress, for her role as the oppressive mother Margaret White in *Carrie* (1976) and for her performance in *Children of a Lesser God* (1986). Her television career was also acclaimed, culminating in a Golden Globe Award win for her role as Catherine Martell in the cult series *Twin Peaks* (1990-1991). Her numerous accolades also include an Emmy Award, won in 1987 for the television film *Promise*.
