
Rachel Roberts
Rachel Roberts (1927-1980) was a Welsh actress, known for her intense performances in British New Wave cinema. Her career took off with the film *Saturday Night and Sunday Morning* (1960), for which she won her first BAFTA Award for Best British Actress. Three years later, her performance as the widow Mrs. Hammond in *This Sporting Life* (1963) earned her a second BAFTA and an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress, establishing her internationally. Her other notable roles include the maid Hildegarde Schmidt in *Murder on the Orient Express* (1974) and the tyrannical headmistress in *Picnic at Hanging Rock* (1975). Praised for her ability to portray complex and tormented characters, Roberts received a third BAFTA for Best Supporting Actress for *Yanks* (1979), confirming her status as a highly talented performer in British and international cinema.
