Raf Vallone

Raffaele "Raf" Vallone (Tropea, February 17, 1916 – Rome, October 31, 2002) was an Italian actor, footballer, and journalist, a leading figure of post-war cinema. A graduate in law and philosophy, with a past as a professional footballer for Torino and a critic for *L'Unità*, he made his film debut under Giuseppe De Santis, who cast him as the protagonist in *Bitter Rice* (1949). The success of the film, a symbol of Neorealism, launched him as a virile and passionate actor, a role consolidated in works such as *The Path of Hope* (1950) by Pietro Germi. His career soon took on an international dimension, working in French and Hollywood productions, including Marcel Carné's *Thérèse Raquin* (1953) and Vittorio De Sica's *Two Women* (1960). Fundamental to his career was his theatrical success in the role of Eddie Carbone in Arthur Miller's *A View from the Bridge*, which he was the first to perform in Europe and later reprised in the film adaptation. He continued to work intensely until an advanced age, receiving the special David di Donatello for lifetime achievement in 1994.
