Ramani Sengupta

Ramani Sengupta was an Indian aviation pioneer and the first Bengali woman pilot. She obtained her "A" flying license in 1934 from the Bengal Flying Club, becoming one of the first Indian women to qualify as a pilot. Her career gained momentum when she joined Kalinga Airlines, founded by Biju Patnaik. In an era when the industry was dominated by men, Sengupta distinguished herself by flying commercial transport aircraft, including the robust Dakota (DC-3) aircraft, accumulating thousands of flight hours. Although no formal awards are recorded in her name, her primary recognition lies in her status as a trailblazer who broke gender barriers and inspired future generations of women pilots in India. Her determination and competence established her as a key figure in her country's aviation history.
