Ranko Akagi (born Tsuru Suda, 1903-1991) was a Japanese actress and a prominent figure in 20th-century Japanese theatre and cinema. A founding member of the acclaimed Zenshinza theatre company in 1931, her career was distinguished by a deep dedication to the performing arts, which she combined with an extensive film career. She appeared in over 120 films, collaborating with some of the foremost directors of her time, including Kenji Mizoguchi, for whom she acted in *Genroku Chūshingura* (*The 47 Ronin*, 1941), and Sadao Yamanaka, who directed her in his masterpiece *Ninjō kami fūsen* (*Humanity and Paper Balloons*, 1937). Her long and influential career was celebrated with numerous awards, including the Medal of Honor with Purple Ribbon in 1965 and the Order of the Precious Crown, Fourth Class, in 1974, in recognition of her significant contribution to Japanese culture.
