Reinhard Heydrich was a high-ranking German official and one of the central figures of the Nazi regime and the Holocaust. He joined the SS in 1931 after being dismissed from the navy and quickly became head of the Security Service (SD). He later also took control of the Security Police (SiPo), which included the Gestapo. His main achievement was the creation, in 1939, of the Reich Security Main Office (RSHA), which unified all police and intelligence agencies under his command. In January 1942, he chaired the Wannsee Conference to coordinate the "Final Solution to the Jewish Question." Appointed Reich Protector of Bohemia and Moravia, he ruled with extreme brutality until his assassination in Prague in 1942. He reached the rank of SS-Obergruppenführer und General der Polizei; he was posthumously awarded the German Order, the highest decoration of the Nazi Party.
