Renato Carpentieri (Savignano Irpino, April 2, 1943) is an Italian actor and theatre director. A prominent figure in experimental theatre, in 1975 he was among the founders of the theatre cooperative Libera Scena Ensemble, with which he experimented with new forms of dramaturgy. He made his film debut in the late 1970s, but his career on the big screen intensified from the 1990s onward, collaborating with important directors of Italian auteur cinema such as Nanni Moretti (*Caro diario*), Gianni Amelio (*Il ladro di bambini*), Mario Martone (*Morte di un matematico napoletano*), and Paolo Sorrentino (*È stata la mano di Dio*). His performance in Gianni Amelio's 2017 film *La tenerezza* earned him the most important awards in Italian cinema: the David di Donatello and the Nastro d'Argento for Best Actor. His acting is characterized by a measured and profound style, capable of expressing complex psychological nuances, which has made him one of the most acclaimed performers on the national scene.
