Renée Duchateau

Renée Duchateau (Liège, 1904 – Uccle, 1969) was a Belgian painter and engraver. A student at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Liège, her career gained momentum after winning the prestigious Belgian Prix de Rome in 1927 and the Prix Godecharle in 1929. She was a prominent figure in the Nervia artistic group, with whom she shared a vision of art rooted in the figurative tradition but interpreted with a modern sensibility. Her artistic output focused predominantly on portraits, female nudes, and still lifes, works characterized by compositional elegance, delicate realism, and a remarkable purity of line. Her style is distinguished by an intimate and quiet atmosphere and a technical mastery that often evokes the influence of the Flemish Primitives and the Italian Renaissance. Thanks to the recognition she received, her art achieved international renown, leading her to exhibit her work at the Venice Biennale.
