Richard Glazar

Richard Glazar, born Richard Goldschmid, was a Czech writer and Holocaust survivor whose career was entirely dedicated to bearing witness. Deported to the Treblinka extermination camp, he was one of the few survivors of the revolt of August 2, 1943. After the war, he became a key witness in the Treblinka trials held in Düsseldorf in the 1960s. His main work is the memoir 'Die Falle mit dem grünen Zaun' (The Trap with the Green Fence), first published in 1992, in which he describes in detail the camp's operation and his escape. He gained international recognition thanks to his lucid and fundamental testimony in Claude Lanzmann's 1985 documentary 'Shoah'. For his tireless work in preserving historical memory, in 1997 he received the Order of Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, one of the highest honors of the Czech Republic, awarded to him by President Václav Havel.
