Richard Johnson is an Australian architect known for his work on major public and cultural buildings. He is a director of the practice Johnson Pilton Walker (JPW). A fundamental part of his career was his collaboration with Jørn Utzon on the renewal and long-term strategic management of the Sydney Opera House, a project he led for over two decades. His other significant works include the National Portrait Gallery of Australia in Canberra, the Museum of Sydney, and the Asian wing of the Art Gallery of New South Wales. His architecture is distinguished by its sensitivity to context, spatial clarity, and formal elegance. For his contribution, Johnson has received Australia's highest honors: in 2008, he was awarded the Gold Medal by the Australian Institute of Architects and was subsequently appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO).
