Robert Allen
Robert Allen, born Robert Allen Deitcher (Troy, February 5, 1927 – Quogue, October 1, 2000), was an American composer and pianist of popular music. He is best known for his prolific collaborations with lyricist Al Stillman, with whom he wrote some of the biggest commercial hits of the 1950s. His most famous compositions include "(There's No Place Like) Home for the Holidays," made a Christmas classic by Perry Como, and two iconic songs for Johnny Mathis, "Chances Are" and "It's Not for Me to Say." He also penned key hits for the group The Four Lads, such as "Moments to Remember" and "No, Not Much!". His work, characterized by catchy and sentimental melodies, defined part of the sound of the pre-rock and roll era. For his significant contribution to American popular music, Allen was inducted into the prestigious Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1984.
