Robert Courtin

Robert Courtin (Paris, 1921 – Paris, 2004) was a French painter and engraver, and a prominent figure of the New School of Paris. Rising to prominence after World War II within the Jeune Peinture movement, he developed a figurative style characterized by a solid compositional structure, a dense painterly texture, and a sober yet intense use of color, often imbued with a melancholic and introspective atmosphere. His works range from still lifes to landscapes and portraits, exploring form and light with great rigor. His career was marked by numerous official awards: in 1950, he won the prestigious Prix de la Jeune Peinture, which consolidated his fame both nationally and internationally. In 1989, he was elected a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts. He was also awarded important honors, including Officer of the Legion of Honour and Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters, in recognition of his contribution to 20th-century French art.
