Robert J. Lang (born 1961) is an American physicist and artist, considered one of the world's leading exponents of origami. After a distinguished career as a physicist, working for institutions such as the California Institute of Technology and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory on lasers and semiconductors, Lang decided to devote himself entirely to his passion for the art of paper folding. He is a pioneer in the application of mathematical principles and computational algorithms to the design of complex models. He has developed software, including the renowned TreeMaker, which generates crease patterns for extremely intricate and realistic figures, such as his famous insects, from a single sheet of paper. His innovative techniques have also found applications in engineering, from the design of safer airbags to the deployment of space telescope lenses. For his contributions, which combine art and science, he was named a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society.
